Winter Wonderland: Family Skiing Tips – It’s no secret that warm weather and time at the beach is my happy place, and for years I dreaded winter. Stuffing kids into puffy coats, hats, and gloves like little sausages is a drag. That was until skiing and snowboarding became a family favorite. Now we look forward to the cooler months and when they are older, we can enjoy time on the mountain together as a family. All three have exceeded my expectations in such a short time, and I’m embarrassed to say that Ryder and Siella have become more confident skiers than their mom!
The whole family is ready for a family ski vacation full of fun activities and outdoor activities. The best part is that we were waiting to get out of the states for a trip and we found Mont Tremblant National Park to check out the perfect ski resort. With only four days off from school, we needed somewhere cold enough to have snow in late November.

How To Plan A Ski Trip During The Covid 19 Pandemic
On Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, we rushed from the city to the airport and arrived in Montreal in less than 2 hours. The mountain is less than 90 minutes from Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (YUL), so we rented a car and drove up, stopping at a local grocery store along the way. Had our trip been a week later, we could have taken advantage of the Porter Air flights that run from UUL to Mont Tremblant during peak season.
Our condo-like room at Place St. Bernard is located at the top of the mountain, with two bedrooms and a loft, overlooking the slopes. We had a fireplace, a full kitchen, and plenty of space to spread out our ski and snowboard gear. A full day of school, flights and car rides wiped out the kids, so we turned right away as we were all eager to hit the slopes in the morning.
It was dark when we arrived, so we couldn’t really make out our surroundings, but when we stepped outside, as cliché as it sounds, it felt like a winter wonderland. The village and buildings are all painted in vibrant colors and covered with a light dusting of snow. The snow kept falling so we stood there soaking it up. It was right out of a magazine.
Since the kids are growing like weeds, we haven’t invested in ski equipment for them yet. I imagine lugging all that stuff on the plane would be a pain. The rental shop was on the other side of our building, so we went there for the fitting. In fact, the gear rental came in handy as the rider decided to switch to snowboarding on day 2, so they changed his package.

For the next three days, we took advantage of Mont Tremblant’s ski school. Their session lasted from 9 am to 3 pm, with a short lunch break in between. Those six hours a day proved invaluable, as their progress over the course of the journey was astonishing. The three graduated from the magic carpet lift and Bunny was tearing up the slopes. I may need another lesson to keep up with them.
After lessons and a full day of skiing, we met each afternoon in the village and warmed up with hot cocoa. There are many shops, cafes and restaurants in the village and we will not repeat the same place twice.
Going from warm New York to 20 and 30 degree weather, we couldn’t spend all day and night outside, so we walked to the village’s indoor pool and waterpark. After the first night, they begged us to go back each day. Aquaclub La Source has a children’s pool, main pool with Tarzan rope jumping rocks, waterfalls and hot tubs. If you’re traveling without kids or just want to relax, indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis are reserved for adults only, in addition to a eucalyptus steam bath and a full fitness center.
While walking around the village of Mont Tremblant, we stumbled upon T Bar, which allows guests of any age to create and personalize t-shirts and hats. The kids each customized their own shirt to take home as the ultimate souvenir. It became their favorite thing to wear to bed every night.
Tips For Skiing With Kids
Besides skiing and snowboarding, if you were to ask the kids to pick a highlight from their Mont Tremblant trip, it would be making their own stuffed animals at Universe Toutou. Naturally, we don’t need any more stuffed animals in our house, but based on the actual stuffing of these fuzzy friends, we couldn’t resist. They chose their own stuffed animals, stuffed them as much or as little as they liked, dressed them up and created mini passports.
Once they were finished, each one was placed in a mini cardboard suitcase for safe storage and travel. Each child capped off the entire experience by reciting an oath to love and protect their new furry companions. Check out the video of them reciting the oath in French below. It can’t be pretty!
Be it lunch or dinner, every meal was amazing. Some of our favorite spots include: La Forge upstairs for an upscale dinner on Thanksgiving, Microbrasserie La Diable – a local microbrewery, Coco Passo for pizza, Le Shack for lunch, Bistro au Grain de Café for coffee and breakfast, and La Vache for the best hot chocolate we’ve ever tasted! No meal is complete without poutine, french fries covered in brown gravy and cheese. We sampled it at almost every restaurant!
The kids came home feeling more confident on the slopes than ever before. Our trip to Mont Tremblant was the perfect way to kick off the ski and snowboard season. But anyone who enjoys the sport knows the “post-ski waddle” — the pain in your glutes and thighs that sends you waddling around the ski lodge. But there are things you can do in the weeks leading up to your ski trip to prepare your body to hit the slopes, which will reduce your pain, reduce your risk of injury, and improve your overall performance. Skiing, and its close cousin snowboarding, use different muscles than summer sports like swimming or cycling. If your knees aren’t centered over your feet while skiing, you’ll find that you won’t be able to carve effectively because your uphill ski won’t hold the edge. Without proper knee positioning, you’re more likely to injure your knees, or at the very least, cause more knee pain than you bargained for.
How can you tell if your knee position is correct? Stand up straight, with your feet hip-width apart and hips aligned over your feet. Bend your knees. Imagine a vertical line falling from your hips to the floor. This invisible line should be between your second and third toes, but without proper training most people find it is closer to their big toe.
