Do you have a vacation in mind? Let us help you make the trip of a lifetime Get Started I’ve been in Nepal for over two months now and, I have to admit, I’m so impressed that I can’t stop thinking. in the field I left. But now enough time has passed that I look back on my time in Southeast Asia and see how the journey unfolded, how it was filled with confusion and uncertainty, joy and sadness, I have found the meaning of experience and appreciation of everything and everyone I crossed.
Before I flew to Thailand, I had some quiet time in Western Europe. I loved the Christmas markets of Germany, as I whiled away the hours in the wineries and churches of the South of France and set foot on the snow-capped Alps, wishing for little more than a warm place to be. to rest my head, a friendly driver to help. me on my way with the occasional hot meal in addition to my simple diet and the weird stuff that came from living on a tight budget.
In stark contrast, my arrival in Bangkok was like a hot, hard slap in the face. I was drawn to Thailand for two reasons. The first was the sympathy I held for eastern Buddhism. But this perspective quickly disappeared when I saw that many priests have bad habits and bad habits like most of us, religious worship was more of an automatic habit than a conscious choice in the Self-aware and alas, the land is not inhabited. with a thoughtful, spiritual focus on everything.
Best Time To Visit Malaysia
Another attraction are the sandy beaches, their promise of sunshine and reclining, cocktail in hand while listening to the sound of the crashing waves. The beach is fun. However, in the five months I spent in Southeast Asia, walking the entire length of Thailand to Malaysia and back, I only stopped at the beach twice. It seems the beach life wasn’t for me.
In order to maintain my determination and high spirits, I had to abandon all plans and expectations and be guided by solitude and circumstances, as if by my own choice. It was as if fate itself intervened and helped direct my direction, although I didn’t always realize it at the time and often felt tossed in every direction, like a marble. in a giant ping-ball machine. Take, for example, the first (and only) attempt to enjoy some time at the beach. Joel and I were in Bangkok for a week, which was more than we had left, so we traveled to Traat from where we planned to take a boat to the island of Koh Chang. Arriving late and without a place to stay, we pitched our tent in the mosquito-infested darkness at the back of the redundant bus park. We could barely lie down but our tent was full of ants. Unknowingly, we pitched the tent on top of a large and busy ant nest and people crawled into an unseen hole, no doubt drawn in by the scraps of food left behind. in from the last time we camped. . Forced to abandon our beds we went to the taxi rank and paid a taxi (which we swore not to do) and booked into the hotel room (which we also swore not to do). At this time we felt like a pair of failures, who sold our principles. However, by morning, after a more restful sleep than expected, our perspective changed completely. We thought the islands would offer us more than the luxuries that tourists get at a price we couldn’t afford and would have little or no chance to do. what we really want is to mingle with the locals and immerse ourselves in it. the real, real Thai culture.
We therefore retraced our route from whence we had come, and decided to proceed northward where we could find refuge and comfort in the little-known hinterland of Isan, and more easily eat us in this strange but beautiful land of smiles. Our first attempts at riding around were a disaster. We felt unprepared (we don’t speak Thai) and our awkward and sad attitude probably didn’t help us either. However, eventually, a helping hand was given, as usual. No one, but two policemen offered us a ride and one even flagged down passing cars to help us on our way. (The last action seems embarrassing and is not consistent with our philosophy of hiking, because we want cars to stop willingly and not out of fear of being caught). We were finally picked up by a tour guide who missed the important turn that would take us north and so invited us to stay at his house for the night, which is exactly opposite. So the plan changed again.
Returning unconsciously to Bangkok after our seemingly pointless trip along the coast, we caught a train out of the city and were thankful as the gray buildings gradually faded away. bad.
