Although community empowerment and sustainable tourism development (STD) have been discussed in the existing literature, little research has focused on the underlying mechanisms between these two variables. Therefore, the current study examines the relationship between community empowerment and STD, along with the mediating role played by community support for tourism. Using social interaction theory, this study establishes theoretical relationships between important variables for STD. An empirical research study was conducted, and data was collected from 353 local residents in the northern region of Pakistan. The results for the data analyzes showed a significant relationship between community empowerment and STD initiatives, and community support for tourism was shown to partially mediate the relationship between the two variables. The results imply that high community empowerment allows the community to establish successful sustainable tourism development with local people’s support for tourism. This study theoretically contributes to the recognition of the idea that the support of community members for tourism has an important function that connects the empowerment of the community to sustain tourism in a local area.

In the last decade, the World Tourism Organization has launched tourism campaigns and sustainable tourism/poverty eradication programs as tools to raise economic benefits in marginalized communities [1, 2, 3]. In particular, it has been widely acknowledged that community-based tourism can improve the economic status of communities [4]. The local people have preserved their traditional culture and society, thus increasing the interest of tourism in local cultures. In addition, the environmental awareness of residents is increasing with a variety of unique and unique species, creating an awareness to protect natural resources to provide beautiful tourism experiences to tourists [5]. That is, community-based tourism is an effective way to ensure the development of sustainable tourism (STD) through the process of sharing benefits among all community members and protecting natural resources [6]. In less developed countries, community-based tourism is an alternative to mass tourism, which Zhao and Timothy [3] argue not only generates financial resources but also helps to reduce the negative effects of mass tourism such as environmental damage. . In other words, successful tourism helps to increase the quality of life of local people by reducing poverty and protecting natural and cultural resources in the community [7].
