Bungee Jumping: Leap Of Faith – For some reason, something gets excited in the human brain that makes us jump from a platform high in the sky with just a bungee cord to save us. When you really think about it, it’s crazy. But we still do it and we do it all over the world.
The history of bungee jumping goes back hundreds of years when it was known as ‘land diving’ in the small island nation of Vanuatu. Legend has it that a woman on Vanuatu’s Pentecost Island was unhappy with her husband and ran away from him into the jungle. The husband followed his wife into the forest and eventually started chasing her, in response to which she climbed a large tree. Then the husband followed her and climbed the tree and the woman tied some vines around her ankles and jumped from the tree. Her husband did the same, but he did not notice that he had tied vines around his feet and he fell to his death, while the woman remained unharmed. Nowadays only men land dive to show their masculinity.
Bungee Jumping: Leap Of Faith
In modern society, bungee jumping (often referred to as ‘bungee’) as we all know and love it originated in New Zealand. A man named AJ Hackett saw a land diving ceremony and took the idea back to New Zealand and began developing his idea of a bungee cord. In 1987, he famously bungeeed off the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France and it is widely believed that this event brought the sport of bungee jumping into the mainstream.
Leap Of Faith
So you want to try bungee jumping on your next vacation, but don’t know where to take that exciting leap of faith? Then this is the right place for you to stay!
Let’s start with the biggest, because we all think we have the courage to go up the world’s highest bungee. Some will be quick to point out that jumps higher than the 233 meter jump from Macau Tower have been recorded, but most of those jumps are not readily available to the public. Those brave enough to make the jump will experience five seconds of freefall before returning to approximately 30 meters above the ground. The jump costs MOP 2,888 (Macanese Pataca) which is approximately $380 AUD, while a souvenir t-shirt from the jump is included in the price.
Queenstown has a high wire pod suspended 134 meters above the River Nevis, which you will remove yourself from and experience 8 seconds of amazing freefall. Many consider it to be one of the scariest bungee jumps in the world, not just for the jump itself but because of the nerve-wracking approach to the jump site. A four-wheel drive will take you down a dangerous mountain road before taking you to a cable car that will take you to the place where you will face your fears. A nerve-wracking experience that will force you to overcome your terror and reach for something inside you to jump. Jumps like Macau include a free t-shirt and will set you back $260 NZD ($240 AUD). If you’re lucky enough to have a New Zealand student ID card you can visit The Nevis for $230 NZD.
Located about three hours from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, The Last Resort is a picturesque retreat overlooking the Bhoti Kosi River. The 166 meter platform will definitely blow your mind as you jump amidst some of the most beautiful scenery for a bungee jumper. This jump will cost you about $108 AUD making it a relatively inexpensive jump. The advantage of The Last Resort is that you can package a few sites together to offer other extreme sports including canyon swings and white water rafting while staying overnight on site. Prices for these extended packages can be found on The Last Resort website.
