If you’re like me and always have your eyes glued to the Ancient Egypt documentaries on the History Channel, you know there’s something undeniably fascinating about Egypt. I spent years dreaming of seeing the pyramids and the Valley of the Kings, but a trip to Egypt was an elusive dream because I had no one to go with. Needless to say, I didn’t have the slightest idea how to get there, where to go once I arrived, or how to navigate a completely foreign environment while traveling to Egypt as a woman.

The anxiety of the unknown was incredibly daunting, which is why this solo Egypt tour was such a blessing. Itineraries were planned for me, my flights were booked for me and hotels were chosen for me. I also felt more confident knowing I wouldn’t be alone when I arrived. All I was worried about was packing and getting myself on the plane.
Solo travel may seem a little strange to some people. When friends and family hear that you’re planning the trip of a lifetime, the first question they ask is, “Who are you going with?” This is difficult to answer when you are on a solo tour. In a way, you’re going alone, but not really – the truth is, you’re going with friends you haven’t met yet. We were a group of women with only two men. The average age in our group was about 64, but it didn’t age us or keep anyone off the dance floor on the cruise ship. If I had to describe the energy of our group in one word, it would be happy. There was hardly a moment when we were all together that you didn’t hear a lot of chatter, laughter and even singing.
It was an amazing way to start our time in Egypt. I hadn’t even been in the country 24 hours and I was looking at one of the world’s most famous wonders. It was a real “What’s this real life like?” I’ll never forget the moment I drove up to the pyramids and caught my first glimpse of them out the window of the tour bus. This sight practically left my jaw on the floor. Photos cannot capture the magnitude of these structures.
We had a truly incredible group on this tour, and it was so special to sit next to someone new every day on the bus, at meals, or in the lounge on the ship. To me, this is one of the most beautiful aspects of solo travel. When you’re not with your friends or family, you can connect with people you may never have met. I even found that I learned a lot about myself by stepping out of my comfort zone.
It’s rare in adulthood that you’re presented with opportunities to make new friends like I did on this tour. It was like going to summer camp as a kid – only we stayed in fancy hotels instead of old log cabins. I really enjoyed hearing why each member of my group chose to travel to Egypt on their own. Everyone had such a unique story or perspective, and it was fun making so many wonderful new friends along our adventures.
Why You Should Solo Travel To Yogyakarta
In all my travels, I can say without a doubt that the temples of Abu Simbel are the most incredible places I have ever seen. These structures, carved in the rocks of the west bank of the Nile River, are very impressive.
Our tour manager arranged for our group to have an Egyptian falafel lunch outside the temples and this moment was just icing on the cake. Enjoying an incredible meal with spectacular views is something I will never forget. I could sit there for hours and marvel at the massive statues of Ramesses II. This is 100% something everyone should add to their list of places to visit in Egypt.
I knew this element of the tour would be beautiful, but the scenery still took my breath away every day. It was also a pleasure to enjoy the Egyptian sun from a lounge chair on the deck before returning home to a Massachusetts winter.
The thought of this traditional Egyptian flatbread still makes my mouth water. Before each meal, they brought us warm baskets of this bread along with hummus, baba ganoush and other dips. Enjoying this was one of my favorite moments every day in Egypt.
Exploring New Delhi Tourist Attractions And Agra Fort
I’ll admit I’m a bit of a shopaholic, but when the tour manager took us to a cotton shop, our whole group had a hard time containing it. Even though I overdid it a bit, the several cotton shirts I ended up buying were much better quality and much cheaper than anything I could find at home. Some travelers even bought Egyptian cotton sheets and sent them home at very good prices. One of my biggest tips for traveling to Egypt is to allow yourself to indulge a little.
When we visited the Kum Ombo Temple (a temple dedicated to the ancient crocodile god, Sobek), we learned about the ways the ancient Egyptians interacted with crocodiles. While visitors today won’t see any live crocodiles cruising along the Nile, you will see their nearly perfectly preserved ancestors in a museum right next to the temple. It was one of the most unique things I had ever seen in my life.
Our tour manager went above and beyond to provide us with the most memorable experiences in Egypt. I can’t imagine this trip without him. He made us all feel safe and supported as he shared his knowledge.
Our tour guide was an archaeologist and Egyptologist and never failed to amaze us with the amount of information he had to give! He taught us about the ancient gods and the way of life of the ancient Egyptians, how to decipher simple hieroglyphs and more. There was never a question he didn’t have an answer for, and we all hung on his every word the entire trip. He was even nice enough to give our group an optional lecture on the history of the pyramids one afternoon on the cruise, which was really confusing to all of us.

Flexibility is always key when traveling and is definitely one of the most important tips for traveling to Egypt. There were a few things on the tour where the closure affected our itinerary.
