Surfing The Waves: Riding The High

Surfing The Waves: Riding The High – Featuring a diverse cast of characters, all with a passion for surfing, High Surf takes the reader on a journey that explores the meaning of surfing and, indeed, often the meaning of life. Between inspirational quotes and lessons from Tim Baker’s personal experience, the book flows effortlessly and manages to capture and eloquently define many of the feelings, sensations and immense satisfaction that we as surfers know and (hopefully!) cherish. It’s a masterpiece of modern surf literature, and Tim’s vast experience and respect for the surfing lifestyle shines through every page.

Beautifully documented stories of survival from water men like Grand Duke Kahanamoku and Brian Keaulana are juxtaposed with biographies of selfless donors like Dr. Dave Jenkins and Captain Paul Watson. The wide spectrum of surfing is also covered by surfing professionals (Slater, Fanning) who reveal their perspectives together with colorful high achievers, all of whom have a common theme and significant impact on their path to success, fulfillment – and sometimes enlightenment.

Surfing The Waves: Riding The High

For some readers, the book may have too many references to the “cosmic”, “trippy” and zen aspects of surfing, but I personally like these things and believe that the unique oneness with nature that surfing offers evokes these types of intense emotions. One of my favorite characters is the scientist Vezen Wu, whose theory is that the negative ions produced by the action of breaking waves cause a chemical reaction that gives us wave training. Bring on those barrels!

Planning A Surfing Trip? Find Out When, Where To Catch The Best Waves

This book offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the spirit of surfing, how it affects us, and the interconnectedness of everything we do. Waves are all around us in countless forms and in life we are always reaching peaks and hitting bottoms. Nothing is static, and the journeys we take, the choices we make, and the lines we weave through the waves of our lives all seem so beautiful and meaningful when you see how these characters, all revered in their own way, speak so humbly and deeply about his own literal and metaphorical wave riding.

“Everything will be,” as Brian Keaulana is simply quoted. I hope that in our corporate world full of greed, aggression and shallow desires, we could stand as brothers and sisters knowing that our kingdom, the water beyond the breakwater, is a sacred place to be protected and respected. We have been given a gift by nature because we have accidentally discovered surfing nirvana, so let’s give something back by spreading good vibes not only among ourselves, but to the whole world.

That’s what I take away from this fine, thought-provoking lecture, to which we respectfully award the Editors’ Choice award. His experience of writing about the latest WSL event, recent athletics record and creative gymnastics routines led him to delve deeper into the minds of legends such as Kelly Slater, Usain Bolt and Simone Biles. Surfing has guided every big decision in my life. I have done since my first study: choosing a university. A mix between Nottingham – great nightlife, lively city – and Exeter – a beautiful part of the country, close to the coast. I chose Exeter. I’ve never been a city girl, although I grew up north of London, in an inland village far from the sea. None of my friends or family surfed, there were no surf magazines or boards attached to the roofs of cars in my town. But somewhere in my teenage years I somehow got it into my head that I just had to learn to surf… And so when I made the first big decision of this life, I made it based on the promise of a thriving uni surf club and weekends spent in the waves!

When I look back, everything I’ve experienced since then – all the waves, journeys and life-changing encounters – comes back to that decision. For surfing, I drove for hours on winter weekends between university lectures and deadlines. To surf, I moved abroad alone at 20 and then again at 23, I didn’t know a soul, but I knew the waves would come. For surfing, I have sacrificed the comforts and safety of home, pushed myself outside my comfort zone and tested my limits. And what has surfing given me in return? Almost a decade of global travel, salt-stained memories and friends for life, heart-opening waves and endless joy.

So take it from me, surfing will change your life in the most beautiful and unexpected ways if you fully open yourself up to it. And if you need more
