Our trip through the Japanese Alps, visiting tiny traditional villages and soaking in beautiful natural hot springs was the highlight of our trip to Japan.
Japan Luxury Vacations — Tailor Made Trips & Tours 2024 & 2025
The Japanese Alps, a region just northeast of Kyoto, offer majestic scenery, delicious food and (for the most part) the opportunity to explore a fascinating region without crowds of tourists wherever you go. We loved the freedom that comes with renting a car in this region and highly recommend it. Before we go into details, let’s be clear: this adventure didn’t come cheap. Especially compared to traveling around Southeast Asia for four months during low season. But if you can afford to splurge a bit, we highly recommend this little Japanese jaunt.
Our route took us from Kanazawa and then through several quaint mountain villages on our way to the beautiful Shinhotaka Ropeway. This route can be done in reverse, but we found that from west to east many tour groups avoid the return route.
Below we describe each of our stops, along with some recommendations for the restaurants and activities we enjoyed the most. We hope this inspires you to have your own adventure in rural Japan! If you have any questions, let us know in the comments.
Kanazawa, known as Kyoto’s little brother, is two hours northeast of Kyoto by train. It is a relatively small city with a population of around 500,000 people, but it excels in terms of music, art, history and culture. Whether you’re strolling through a modern art museum, visiting a tiny bar with floor-to-ceiling shelves of records, or exploring the grounds of a 19th-century castle, you’ll feel enveloped in the artistic atmosphere of small-town Kanazawa. Not to mention the numerous antique and vintage shops located on the small side streets.
The Perfect Taiwan Road Trip
We spent a couple of days just wandering the cute alleys and exploring what this quaint city has to offer. On our first day, we brought a picnic lunch to Kenroku-en Garden and then grabbed lunch while strolling through the nearby Omicho Fish Market. We tried amazingly delicious homemade pasta at The Cottage and then sipped Japanese scotch in a tiny bar across the street from our hostel (K’s House is a social hostel with friendly guests that actually offers double beds!). Kanazawa is the first city on this trip that we thought: you can actually live here!
Once you’ve had your fill of Kanazawa’s delights, pick up a rental car from the station, pack some snacks and supplies, and set off for an easy, one-hour drive to the Gokayama region of the Japanese Alps. Here you’ll see wonderfully lovely 16th-century thatched houses that rival, and often surpass, those found in the equally quaint English countryside.
Kamitaira, a tiny street in the city, is the best place for your base. The town itself doesn’t have much to do, but it does have a useful visitor center, a couple of lovely (and affordable) ryokans – or a Japanese guesthouse – and it’s easy to get to other towns you’ll need on your trip. The beauty of this route is that you will arrive in the Gokayama region from the north, meaning you will reach more remote villages first. We only stayed one night (at the beautiful Takazuri Kira Guesthouse) but highly recommend staying longer and using it as your base.
From Kamitaira it’s a short drive to Ainokura, a neighboring town to the east with about two dozen thatched houses. (Alternatively, you can splurge even more and stay the night in one of these houses.) Get there early and enjoy the isolation of the area before the tour buses arrive late in the morning.
My Lovely Koyasan Trip
Activities in town are somewhat limited, but we found the two small museums interesting, and (for a fee) you can also try your hand at traditional paper making. The town itself is beautiful, set among golden rice fields and picturesque.
