Horseback Riding Across Majestic Landscapes – This National Horse Day (Dec. 13) we’re featuring a mustang from the Palomino Buttes Herd Management Area (HMA) in Southern Oregon.
He grew up with his mother and two sisters in Eastern Pennsylvania, enjoying young adult books, lip-syncing indie-folk music, and caring for small animals.

“I couldn’t fit a horse in my family’s apartment, so running and owning a horse seemed like something,” Gin said. “To overcome these thoughts, I have accepted that I don’t have to believe in my success as much as I believe in my ability to try.”

She’s a creative girl, Gin. Always thinking, searching, and adjusting with the confidence of a child in bathing suits. A few years ago, he wondered how he would survive without a home. Those thoughts led to a solo tour in America, which he completed in 2019. He did not graduate from high school at the time – only 18, shy, ugly, and left home for first time.
Then came the second coast-to-coast trip, this time in a motorcycle club called Sal and Faith. What does a girl do when she rides a bike from the Atlantic to the Pacific? Make it three on a horse, of course!
Meet Finley: a 6-year-old, $125 gelding, “the wonder of all American horses,” as Gin calls him. Finley was collected from the Palomino Buttes HMA in Oregon in 2021. He was Gin’s first horse and first mustang! They met with no end in sight.
With running on his mind and a passion for mustangs, he jumped in with a friend and casually attended a wild horse breeding event in Tennessee. It took three days to find the horses that were available ahead of time, but Gin was able to go at the last minute. He took the time to look at only one picture of each animal.

Finley captured her heart with her beautiful and well-defined figure, flowing forelock, and gait. But there were 17 foster children before him, and each one could choose three animals.
He asked, “What did I do to deserve this horse, to reap the benefits of years of someone else’s hard work?”
“I really like the challenge and the great honor of having a horse that I can learn from and grow with the world,” said Gin. “It’s not for everyone, but it works for me.”
And as luck would have it, each foster child chose a different animal, leaving Finley to find Gin.

“I really like Oregon mustangs, with my favorite HMAs being Palomino Butte and Stinkingwater,” he said. “Palomino Butte has beautiful faces with some of the best looks I’ve ever seen, like a quarter horse.”
The first few weeks with Finley tested him to the max. A month later he was untouchable.
“We’re in this whole new world, and I’m thankful for being so humble. I felt like my horse was a bigger friend because of it,” Gin said.
A change of scenery and a new opportunity to grow with a talented coach changed their path for the better. Gin connected with trainer Sea G. Rhydr through the Long Riders Guild – the world’s only international association for equestrian riders – and spent four months with him, preparing for cross-country travel.

The horse and man duo began their journey in New Jersey when Finley was 120 days out of the stable. At that time, he was uncomfortable being touched by strangers, so Gin led him around the entire state. But after a week, he rested his head on his shoulder, and in Central Pennsylvania, Gin ran with a leash and halter.
“One of the best things about Finley is how much he tries,” Gin said. “And he is dignified and steadfast, with a raptor-like eye and maturity beyond his years.”
Together they traveled more than 3,600 miles, visited 10 states, crossed three rivers and many mountains, and made many new friends.
“I had to take Finley home to Palomino Buttes, where he was born in the woods south of Burns, Ore. We arrived two years after his collection, on the dot! While I was holding her belly in my hand, I didn’t point it at her when we were in the HMA. I want to let him choose our path.

He took us to the base of a small canyon where there was a natural spring with green grass, something I didn’t know was there by looking at my maps. It doesn’t look like the rest of the sagebrush country that surrounds us. More than anything, what warmed my heart was knowing that, when we had to leave, he didn’t object. I was very worried that he didn’t want to go with me. But he left with his ears forward, never looking back.
So, what’s next for these two? Gin is on the east side for the future, going to college and thinking about his latest adventure: sailing the Yukon River across Alaska. Fin is relaxing on Lopez Island in Washington by the Sea, has several acres of property and enjoys the occasional drive to town or the countryside.
“Even though we’re apart now, in different parts of the country like when we met, I’ll see him again. I can’t leave Finley forever,” said Gin. “He’s my equine best friend, and we have an inseparable bond.”

No medicine is legally required to travel to Kyrgyzstan. It is a good idea to prepare your medicines before you go to Kyrgyzstan.
