Safety Tips For Solo Travelers: An Essential Guide
When planning your travel plans, especially before traveling internationally, there are a few things you should do, such as letting your family and close friends know about your travel plans. Consider registering your trip with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (S.T.E.P.), which is offered free to US citizens. This allows you to receive important information about the security situation based on your destination country, allowing you to make informed decisions about your travel plans. In emergencies, the U.S. Embassy will contact you in natural disasters, civil unrest, or even family emergencies.
Research the destination and its level of security. Check your country’s website for travel advice, read reviews, and more. Many sites like Trip Advisor share location reviews and you can ask questions about the safety of your travel area.
Having your embassy information handy makes it easy in case of an emergency. Also, knowing the local emergency number is an advantage. Not every country uses 911, like Australia has 000 and the UK has 999.
You’re in your dream location and you can’t resist sharing all the fun. Sharing your location isn’t a bad thing, but avoid geotagging your photos. If you insist on sharing your location, do so, especially after checking out hotels. This will ensure that no one can find you at that moment. I never share the location of my hotel when I travel, and I never share my exact location before I leave.
Solo Travel Safety Tips
You may want to take a taxi to your hotel, especially from the airport; However, rideshares are generally safe. Uber can be found in many countries, and you can share your location with others through the app when you get into a car. Your location is tracked and your ride is often priced, so you don’t have to take out your wallet – all factors that help reduce theft. But be sure to check your pickup truck’s license plate number before entering.
Even if you’re on a budget, your safety should be your top priority and you can spend less and travel more. While public transportation is generally safe, I recommend choosing rideshare over taxis, especially at night. Consider a budget hotel or hotel above a hotel in a central location, which may be a bit more expensive. Your security is valuable and there are ways to get a good deal on a hotel room.
You may prefer a room closer to the ground floor so you don’t have to carry your luggage, but the farther from the ground floor the better. It is unlikely that someone will enter your room. However, remember to lock your room door when you go to bed.
Don’t keep all your cash at once. With that said, don’t put all your credit and debit cards in your wallet. Having cash on hand makes it easy to make purchases and even tip, but it’s a good idea to keep some safe at your hotel. If you’re pickpocketed, you’ll feel better knowing you’ll be able to get cash.
